Summer Term Newsletter July 2021

Welcome

Welcome to the fourth edition of Transforming Futures Trusts' new staff newsletter.

With only a few more weeks left until the end of the academic year, I wanted to provide a business update on key items across the Trust as follows:-

Covid

The announcements this week that the country is finally moving out of various forms of lockdown are I’m sure welcomed by us all.  We will though continue to operate through our bubbles until the end of this term and look forward to some further clarification from the DfE about arrangements for the autumn term.  In the meantime, please continue to be prudent in relation to the measures we have in place to limit the spread of the virus and keep our school communities safe.  We have very recently had to send pupils home to self-isolate in both our Cornwall setting and at Courtlands following positive Covid-19 tests.

Partnership Working

The Board of Trustees, Heads and I have been chatting to various other Trusts and mainstream schools about our Trauma and Therapeutic Informed practices and the real positive impacts these have on our students.  There is a clear level of interest and as a direct result, Ted Wragg have asked for some training in Exeter and other trusts are also making detailed enquiries.  The Trust is also investigating developing some specific CPD packages over the coming months, and there is interest from other special schools for access which is hugely positive and a great testament to the work you all deliver.

Haven Project

Along with investigating Estates generally, an opportunity has arisen to add to ACE Tiverton, an additional property adjacent to the main building.  This provides an exciting opportunity to develop our education provision through the establishment of a formal, nurture centre that will support students across our age range who will benefit from a continuous provision model of learning. We are currently undertaking the necessary due diligence around this proposal and hope to be able to present a business case to the Trust Board in July.

Ensign House

The Trust has exercised a break clause in the lease and we will be vacating Ensign House before mid-December 2021.  Central Services staff will then either work from Delt offices or continue to work remotely.

Mobile Phones

The Trust is currently ending some very expensive mobile phone contracts and renewing on vastly more favourable terms.  This will entail changes for some staff and further details will be communicated before the end of term.  This project is important in terms of our commitment to achieving value for money in relation to procuring goods and services and to be worthy custodians of public money. Any efficiency savings made can then bring opportunities to reinvest back into teaching and learning.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you for all your efforts and commitment during this year.

Best wishes

Gavin Gracie, CEO

A personal message from the Chair & Trustees

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to express the appreciation and admiration from the Trust Board for what you achieved over the past year and more, in the face of huge challenges and adversity.  We know that many of you have gone well beyond what could reasonably have been asked in order to keep students safe, and to maintain their education.  That focus is at the heart of what the Trust stands for, and which you deliver.  We thank you most sincerely.

We recognise that the Trust Board may feel quite distant from the day-to-day work and challenge.  The pandemic has in some ways increased that distance, because we have been unable to visit as we wanted, very badly, to do.  Many of the Trustees (there are nine) have been appointed during the pandemic, including myself as Chair.  We have engaged very fully with the Heads, and ensured that their views and their sense of what is important to you and to students is uppermost in our deliberations and decisions. But that is not the same as being able to visit regularly and to get to know the schools, the staff, and the students. With the changes recently announced by the Government we intend to make up that ground at the earliest opportunity in the new school year.

The new Trustees have themselves worked hard.  Their main task has been to re-build the governance of the Trust in the widest sense, and to understand as much as they can about the range and complexity of student and community needs that we aim to satisfy, and to re-build also the confidence of key stakeholders.  There is good evidence that we are making progress with that, and I would be very happy to share that with you, or discuss it, if any member of staff would like to do so.

As you may know, we have decided to change the governance at school level and create a Support and Challenge Group for each Academy (more info in the recruitment article below).  We have also designated at least one Trustee per school to create a direct channel between the schools and the Trust Board, and to strengthen the Board’s direct understanding of the school experience.

We have also asked three of the Trustees to take on the role of link Safeguarding Trustee to each of the Academies, Geraldine Herage – ACE Tiverton, Karen Deeny – ACE Plymouth and Carole Burgoyne – Courtlands. They have had the opportunity to undertake visits to the academies and have been impressed by the commitment of staff to ensure that our children and young people are safe. They have seen and heard examples of work and training that you have undertaken which has ensured that the children and young people’s needs are considered in everything you do. They asked me to thank you for the high quality work you are doing in this important area.

One important shift in the approach of the new Board has been to focus more on wellbeing, very much with the wellbeing of staff in mind. The first Wellbeing Network meeting has taken place and was attended by representatives for each of the Academies and Karen Deeny and Carole Burgoyne attended as Trustee champions for wellbeing.  They were impressed by the amount of work that is already underway around the wellbeing agenda and look forward to seeing and hearing more about this over the next year and seeing this develop further through the sharing of ideas and best practice across the Trust.

Finally, none of us underestimates the ongoing challenges of the post-Covid world, even if we achieve that condition soon.  Our students all require special attention and support in one way or another, and their relative vulnerability will no doubt deepen the need for that support after as well as during the pandemic.  The Board is conscious of this, and keen to do anything within its powers and resources to make that task easier for you as staff, and with the best possible outcomes for the students.

If you would like to respond in any way to this message, or to have an exchange on any aspect of the Board’s role and work, please feel free to get in touch.

Finally, good wishes for the summer break and we look forward to meeting many more staff and students in person in the near future.

Best regards on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Clive Grace O.B.E.

Chair of the Board of Trustees

Trust Policies Project

Over the course of the last year Josie Medforth, COO and the team have undertaken a Policy Review Project to ensure the Trust has a suite of policies that are supporting the teaching and learning and the operations of the Trust effectively.

Moreover, this piece of work is a core building block for the Trust to have clear and effective governance and decision making based on up to date, statutorily compliant, and fully accurate policies across the spectrum of its operations and responsibilities.

There are a number of new and/or updated MAT policies that are now available. To view these please visit the Trust website here.  For ease of reference they have also been highlighted below and we would ask that you ensure they are embedded into practice within your local settings:-

  • Data Protection
  • Information Security
  • Procurement Policy

Thank you

CIF Bids Awarded for Courtlands

The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is an annual bidding round for eligible academies, sixth-form colleges and VA schools to apply for capital funding. The priority for the fund is to address significant condition need, keeping education provider buildings safe and in good working order. This includes funding projects to address health and safety issues, building compliance and poor building condition.

Josie Medforth, COO headed up our CIF bid applications and we are delighted to announce that both CIF bids put in for Courtlands were successful and will see the best part of £700,000 being spent on the school.

This includes replacing all the old metal framed windows and doors with thermal efficient, safe double glazing. The second bid to replace the ineffective fire alarm and new emergency lighting throughout was also successful. Spread across both bids is approximately £200,000 worth of asbestos removal which is a massive bonus and will significantly reduce the risk to pupils and staff.

Our Estates team will be working with our contractors over the next couple of weeks to see what can be delivered in the summer break where possible however it is noted that this will be a real challenge due to the late results from the DfE.

Well done to all those involved in securing this funding!

ACE Tiverton’s Headteacher Hannah features in new Podcast

Our Headteacher at ACE Tiverton, Hannah Smart has been interviewed on the popular Teaching Schools South West podcast.

Hannah was asked onto the podcast to talk about how to teach relationship, sex and health education in a school catering for young people with a diagnosis of autism or a social, emotional or mental health need.

So what did Hannah say about RSHE in Tiverton?

“We always start with the young people; where they have come from, what background they have experienced, what their life in mainstream education was like.  And then we draw out themes that can be discussed on the RSHE curriculum, but always based around them. So some of our young people with autism are happy to talk about, for example, personal hygiene and showering – it is just a process of them gathering information.  But for others with social or emotional challenges, the very fact of having such a conversation can be very difficult.  We have to be flexible.”

Hannah was interviewed by Lisa Whitworth, Project Director at South West Institute for Teaching.  She said “It was great to have Hannah on the pod.  Her unique experience and expertise - and the examples she gave about teaching RHSE in a special school – were both interesting and very useful to our listeners.”

Wellbeing Update

As referred to within our Chair's message above and at the time of last writing, we mentioned that we were in the process of setting up a trust-wide wellbeing network group to include individuals from across each of our academies and central services/business support staff.

We have now held our first meeting that took place on 16th June. This meeting provided a great opportunity to share some fantastic work being undertaken within each of TFT’s academies.

Brilliant examples of some projects colleagues have been involved in include the Forests for Wellbeing and The Hare and the Tortoise go to Forest School: taking the scenic route to academic attainment via emotional wellbeing outdoors. Some of our academies are also promoting the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation's calendar that encourages us all to recognise how these small acts of kindness can make a difference to the health and wellbeing of those around us and in the Foundation's words "make kindness the norm".

As we get closer to the end of the summer term after what has been a challenging year, it is important that we look after our own mental health in the lead up to the holidays so that we can benefit from much needed rest and recouperation. There are some great resources available on-line. Check out Mental Health Uk's top 5 tips for mental wellbeing available here.
